Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Hawks earn first victory at UMSL since 2011

A balanced offense and opportunistic defense powered Rockhurst to a 76-67 victory over the Missouri-St. Louis Tritons Saturday in St. Louis.

The Hawks, 8-6, moved their winning streak to four in a row while collecting their first win at UMSL since 2011.

"This is a great win for our program," said Rockhurst coach Drew Diener. "We have great respect for UMSL's program. Our guys were extremely hungry out of the gates. They are playing with great heart on the defensive end."

Rockhurst jumped out to a 22-14 lead in the first nine minutes. Three-pointers by Aiden Clarey and Jake Buchanan helped give the Hawks a 34-31 halftime lead.

The Hawks took control of the game behind an 11-2 run in the second half. Quinton Curry and Nick Volz combined for four baskets to give Rockhurst a 67-56 lead with 5:45 left.

"We disrupted them defensively and played unselfish on offense. It was another game where we had great contributions off the bench (41 points)," added Diener.

Chris Hamil, Curry and Buchanan combined for 38 points coming off the bench. Hamil led the Hawks with 16 points on five-of-10 shooting. Curry posted 13 points and four rebounds. Buchanan added nine points and five rebounds.

Curtis Lewis finished with 12 points, six rebounds and four assists. Thomas Faber tallied 10 points.

The Hawks shot 46.7 percent from the field (28 of 60). Rockhurst also scored 20 points off 14 UMSL turnovers.

Isaiah Fuller led UMSL, 11-3, with 13 points. The Tritons shot 51.1 percent from the field (24-of-47).

The Hawks return home to host McKendree on Thursday.
