Hawks fall at home to balanced Lewis attack

A balanced scoring attack carried the Lewis Flyers to a 73-47 victory over Rockhurst Sunday at RU's Mason-Halpin Field House.

Lewis jumped out to a 12-4 lead in the first six minutes on the way to a 34-21 halftime lead. The Flyers opened the second half on a 12-2 run to take a 46-23 lead at the 13:45 mark.

"It was a very disappointing day for all of us in this program," said Rockhurst coach Drew Diener. "We struggle to have an identity. We are inconsistent, which has us all off-balance and searching."

The Hawks, 3-4, were held to a season-low 14 field goals and three assists while being outscored 38-20 in the paint.

"I prefer to think of our potential rather than dwell on our recent poor play. I do feel we have high character guys. We have what it takes to turn this around," Diener said.

Nick Volz led the Hawks with nine points and 10 rebounds. Quinton Curry scored seven points on three-of-six shooting. Thomas Faber posted a game-high five steals.

The Hawks shot 28.0 percent from the field. The Hawks made 17-of-24 free throws (70.8 percent).

Bruno Williams led Lewis, 4-2, with 16 points. The Flyers shot 50.0 percent from the field (26 of 52) and 88.2 at the foul line (15 of 17).

The Hawks host Missouri S&T on Wednesday at 5 p.m.
