Drury rides outside shooting to post win over Hawks

Drury rode the outside shooting of Jason Montgomery and Conley Garrison in posting a 91-81 victory Rockhurst Saturday in Springfield, Missouri.

The Panthers, 5-3, connected on 15-of-26 three-point field goals. Montgomery made seven threes while scoring a game-high 28 points. Garrison scored 26 points behind five 3-pointers.

Rockhurst rallied from a 65-49 deficit at the 14:38 mark to cut Drury's lead to five points twice late in the second half. The Panthers held off the Hawks by going on a 9-0 run to take an 86-72 lead with 1:14 left.

"We did a lot of things well today, but they were negated by our 18 turnovers that led to a lot of layups and open threes," said Rockhurst coach Drew Diener. "We will win games if we stay tough minded."

Rich Byhre and Thomas Faber combined for 36 points and eight 3-pointers to pace the Rockhurst offense. Byhre shot six-of-eight from the field and grabbed a team-high seven rebounds. Faber connected on four-of-eight shots, in addition to collecting six rebounds and four assists.

Nick Volz finished with 15 points, seven assists and six rebounds. Curtis Lewis tallied 10 points, three assists and two steals. Charlton Offermans added eight points and five rebounds.

Rockhurst shot 47.5 percent from the field (29 of 61). The Hawks made 11-of-35 shots behind the arc (31.4 percent).

Drury shot 60.9 percent from the field (28 of 46) and 57.7 percent on 3-point shots.

The Hawks (4-6) return home to face William Jewell on Tuesday.
