Hawks win tie-breaker to earn No. 6 seed in GLVC Tournament

The Rockhurst Hawks wrapped up the regular season with an 84-71 loss at Drury Saturday in Springfield, Missouri.

Rockhurst finished in a tie for sixth place with Southwest Baptist in the GLVC Point Rating System and won the tie-breaker for the No. 6 seed by virtue of its two wins over SBU.

The Hawks (16-12, 12-8 GLVC) will face third-seeded Truman State (20-8, 16-4 GLVC) in the quarterfinals of the GLVC Tournament at 6 p.m. Friday in Edwardsville, Illinois.

Drury took control of the game after going on a 21-6 run over a seven-minute stretch to take a 73-60 lead with 4:06 left. The Hawks missed seven shots and turned the ball over three times during the Panthers' run.

"Our turnovers (16) were too high today," said Rockhurst coach Drew Diener. "Many were unforced and led to easy points on the other end. There was a stretch in the second half that we coughed it up and then had breakdowns in our half-court defense. Their shooters made us pay."

Junior guard Chris Hamil led the Hawks with 24 points, five rebounds and three assists. Hamil scored 13 points in the first half, which ended with Drury leading 37-33.

Quinton Curry posted 17 points, eight rebounds, four assists and two steals. Thomas Faber scored 11 points behind three 3-pointers. Lasse Gummerus added 10 points and four rebounds.

Rockhurst shot 48.1 percent from the field and 47.6 percent on 3-pointers.

The Panthers (20-8, 13-7 GLVC) shot 55.2 percent from the field and 39.1 percent on 3-pointers. Conley Garrison led Drury with 30 points.
