Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Hawks end season with loss to Truman in GLVC Tournament

Truman State went on a big run inside the last 10 minutes to pull away for an 85-68 victory over Rockhurst in the first round of the GLVC Men's Basketball Tournament Friday at the First Community Arena in Edwardsville, Illinois.

Trailing 56-52 with just under nine minutes left, the Hawks quickly fell behind by 16 points over the next three minutes. Truman went on a 14-2 run to take a 70-54 lead with 5:36 left.

Senior forward Brodric Thomas scored seven of his 23 points in that stretch for the Bulldogs. The GLVC Player of the Year hit a three-pointer to give Truman a nine-point lead and added a driving layup at the 6:20 mark to widen the margin to 12.

"Brodric had some good individual moves and he got to the line a few times," said Rockhurst coach Drew Diener. "On the other end, we weren't able to capitalize and that four-point lead went to 12 in a matter of four possessions. They made us pay on our rotations."

Truman shot 70 percent from the field (14 of 20) in the second half and scored 49 points after halftime. The Hawks were held to 41.7 percent shooting (15 of 36) in the second half.

"We were getting some good shots," Diener said. "We only had nine turnovers. I think it was that stretch where we missed four straight, while Brodric was on fire and it got to 12, and we could never get it back. I think they were able to get on that run and we got in a drought."

Junior center Quinton Curry led the Hawks with 20 points and five rebounds. Curry made nine of 19 field goals.

Nick Volz posted 16 points on eight-of-14 shooting. Curtis Lewis finished with 12 points and five assists. Freshman Thomas Faber added nine points and five rebounds. Chris Hamil was held to eight points on three-of-eight shooting.

Rockhurst (16-13) shot 46.0 percent from the field and 30.4 percent on 3-pointers. Truman (21-8) connected on 62.2 percent of its field goals and 11-of-20 three-pointers (55.0 percent).

"I was hoping we could take a bigger step this year," added Diener. "The injury to (senior guard) Undra Wilson and (Curtis Lewis's) injury hurt us with our depth.

"Our guys had an awesome mentality. We have another offseason where we get the majority of our guys back. We need to be a better shooting team and we need to pass better."
