Strong finish carries Hawks past SBU Bearcats

Rockhurst moved another step closer to locking up a spot in the 2020 GLVC Tournament after posting a 63-58 victory over Southwest Baptist Thursday night in Bolivar, Missouri.

The Hawks (16-11, 12-7 GLVC) moved up one spot to sixth in the GLVC Point Rating System with one regular season game left on Saturday (at Drury). The top eight teams in the GLVC begin tournament action on Thursday, March 5 in Edwardsville, Illinois.

Rockhurst ended the game on a 10-2 run to rally from a 56-53 deficit with 3:53 left. The Hawks went eight-for-eight at the foul line in the final 3:29. A layup by Nick Volz gave Rockhurst a 61-58 lead with 21 seconds left.

"This was a gutsy effort by our guys," said Rockhurst coach Drew Diener. "We shot the ball great in the first half and defended them great. In the second half, their dribble penetration hurt us. We got big stops late when we needed them.

The Hawks bolted out to a 38-24 lead at halftime while closing the first half on a 23-6 run over the final 10 minutes.

Quinton Curry led the Hawks with 22 points and 11 rebounds. Curry connected on seven-of-14 field goals and eight-of-10 free throws.

Chris Hamil scored 13 points and grabbed four rebounds. Volz added nine points and five rebounds. Thomas Faber and Lasse Gummerus combined for 15 points and four 3-point baskets.

Rockhurst shot 42.6 percent from the field and 75.0 percent from the foul line. Curry and Volz both hit four free throws in the closing minutes.

The Bearcats (19-8, 12-7 GLVC) were held to 36.2 percent shooting from the field.

"They (SBU) have just joined our league," Diener said, "but I really respect their program and how they do things."
