Rockhurst leaves Minneapolis with 9-8 victory

Rockhurst scored seven runs in the first two innings and held off a late rally by Bemidji State to edge the Beavers, 9-8, in the final game of a three-game indoor series Saturday at the U.S. Bank Stadium in Minneapolis.

Freshman Clayton Medlin came out of the bullpen to retire nine of the last 11 hitters to get his first collegiate save. Michael Hellman got his first win of the season, allowing three runs on seven hits over 4.1 innings.

Bemidji State scored three runs in the seventh to pull within one run of the Hawks. Medlin got out of a bases-loaded jam in the seventh with a 9-8 lead. He only allowed one base runner over the final two innings.

Tommy Kraus opened the scoring with a two-run single in the first, followed by an RBI single by Blake Pickard. Nic Mertes hit a three-run triple in the second to give the Hawks a 6-0 lead.

Joe Specht, who led the Hawks with three hits, drove in two runs with a double in the fourth and single in the sixth to put Rockhurst in front 9-3.

Mertes, Kraus and Pickard each finished with two hits and combined for six RBIs as the Hawks finished with 16 hits.
