Lewis posts career-high 33 points in road win over Miners

Curtis Lewis scored a career-high 33 points to lead Rockhurst to an 83-81 victory over Missouri S&T Saturday in Rolla, Missouri.

Lewis connected on 13-of-22 field goals, including five-of-nine 3-pointers. He scored 18 points in the second half to help Rockhurst rally from a 42-41 halftime deficit.

Chris Hamil and Thomas Faber each drained big three-pointers down the stretch. Hamil's 3-pointer gave the Hawks an 80-78 lead at the 1:22 mark. Faber's three widened the lead to 83-78 with 48 seconds left.

The Miners nearly came back to win the game. Julien Smith dropped in a 3-pointer to pull S&T within two points and Smith missed a game-winning three with four seconds left.

"That was a hard-earned road win," said Rockhurst coach Drew Diener. "I was very impressed with their personnel; they are very difficult to guard.

"We again made some big shots late and got key defensive stops. We did not allow them to get one offensive rebound, which in my coaching career I don't remember that happening. In tight games, that is huge."

The Hawks (3-1) held the Miners to 23.1 percent shooting from 3-point range (six of 26).

Rockhurst shot 48.4 percent from the field (31 of 64). The Hawks made 14-of-31 three-pointers (45.2 percent).

Hamil finished with 15 points behind three 3-pointers. Nick Volz posted 11 points and 11 rebounds.

Lasse Gummerus and Jake Auer combined for 12 points and 10 rebounds. Lewis added five rebounds, four assists and two steals.

Kaden Froebe led S&T (0-4) with 20 points and five assists.
