Rockhurst falls short at home against UMSL

Missouri-St. Louis held off a late Rockhurst rally to edge the Hawks, 82-77, Saturday at RU's Mason-Halpin Field House.

Trailing 71-62 with 4:32 left, Rockhurst went on a 13-6 run to cut UMSL's lead to 77-75 with 1:29 left. Curtis Lewis keyed the late rally with a pair of 3-point field goals.

The Tritons proceeded to barely beat the shot clock on their next possession. Shane Wissink banked in a three-pointer to give UMSL an 80-75 lead with 54 seconds left.

Marquis Collins salted the road win with two free throws with 24 seconds left. The Hawks' Chris Hamil missed three shots in the final 16 seconds.

"We had a great fight to get back into this game," said Rockhurst coach Drew Diener. "The bank shot three under a minute was a big shot for them."

UMSL jumped out to a 40-20 lead in the first half and took a 47-33 lead into halftime. The Tritons made 20 of their first 34 field goals.

"In four of our five games we have had 20-point leads and deficits that have evaporated," Diener said. "It seems that we are a bit inconsistent in our execution on both ends."

Rockhurst shot 43.8 percent from the field (28 of 64). The Hawks made nine-of-26 three-pointers (34.6 percent).
