Strong finish carries Hawks to 74-68 victory

Chris Hamil and Quinton Curry combined for 41 points to lead Rockhurst to a 74-68 victory over Illinois Springfield Thursday at RU's Mason-Halpin Field House.

Hamil led the Hawks with 24 points on eight-of-17 shooting. He scored 16 points in the first half to help give Rockhurst a 44-26 halftime lead.

Rockhurst took a 22-point lead, 51-29, less than three minutes into the second half. Over the next nine minutes, Springfield outscored the Hawks 28-4 to take a 57-55 lead with 8:18 left to play. The Prairie Stars scored 16 unanswered points in their run.

Curry scored six points to key a 13-3 run to give the Hawks a 68-60 lead with 1:42 left. Curry ended the night with 17 points, 10 rebounds and three blocked shots.

"We came out and played a fantastic first half on both ends of the floor," said Rockhurst coach Drew Diener. "They got hot in the second half and really put our backs against the wall. I was proud how we were able to persevere after losing our big lead. That shows great character."

The Hawks held Springfield to 39.7 percent shooting from the field (25 of 63) and 28.0 percent shooting from 3-point range.

"We defended at a high level today. Holding a team under 40 percent shooting is a nice accomplishment," Diener added.

Rockhurst shot 45.5 percent from the field (25 of 55). The Hawks made 10-of-18 three-pointers in the first half.

Freshman Jake Auer scored nine points on three 3-pointers. Thomas Faber finished with eight points and six rebounds.

Keymonta Johnson led Springfield (1-1) with 23 points and seven rebounds.

The Hawks (2-1) play at Missouri S&T Thursday at 1 p.m.
