Second-half run leads SBU past Rockhurst

Southwest Baptist jumped out to a double-digit lead early in the second half on the way to a 91-83 victory over Rockhurst Wednesday in Bolivar, Missouri.

The Bearcats opened the second half by connecting on eight of their first nine shots during a 17-4 run to take a 60-50 lead with 15:29 left.

Rockhurst rallied down the stretch, going on a 9-1 run to pull within four points at 87-83 with 24 seconds left. The Bearcats held off the Hawks by making their final four free throws.

"This game was lost in transition defense and being unable to contain the driver," said Rockhurst coach Drew Diener. "They shot such a high percentage because of all their layups. We need to get better in that area."

Redshirt freshman Rich Byhre led the Hawks with a career-high 18 points on six-of-eight shooting. Curtis Lewis tallied 16 points, four rebounds and four assists. Quinton Curry posted 14 points and five rebounds.

Thomas Faber scored seven of his nine points in the first half to help give the Hawks a 46-43 halftime lead. Freshman Jake Auer knocked down three 3-pointers for nine points. Nick Volz collected eight points and six rebounds.

Rockhurst shot 40.3 percent from the field (27 of 67). The Hawks made 10-of-25 three-pointers (40.0 percent).

Mitch Ganote led SBU (2-1) with 20 points, nine rebounds and 11 assists. The Bearcats shot 64.8 percent from the field (35 of 54) and 46.7 on 3-pointers (seven of 15).

The Hawks (3-3) return to action on Jan. 3 at home against the Lewis Flyers.
