Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Second-half run carries McKendree past Hawks

Five players scored in double figures to lead McKendree to an 87-75 victory over Rockhurst Sunday in Lebanon, Illinois.

The Bearcats (1-0) shot 52.2 percent from the field while holding the Hawks to 36.1 percent shooting.

"We did not play well offensively today," said Rockhurst coach Drew Diener. "Clearly, they had something to do with that, but there were many situations that we didn't capitalize on good execution. We only committed seven turnovers but shot poor from three."

The Hawks, who made a dozen 3-point field goals in an 81-70 win at Southern Indiana on Friday, were limited to six-of-23 shooting from beyond the 3-point arc. The Bearcats, meanwhile, hit 10-of-22 three-pointers.

"Defensively, they put you in a tough situation with five shooters on the floor. They shot it well and made some big ones when we cut it to four. Our rebounding was strong as well. We have to play better on Thursday (vs. William Jewell)," Diener said.

McKendree opened the second half on an 18-4 run to take a 20-point lead, 56-36, with 16:39 left to play. The Bearcats made three 3-pointers during the run while holding to the Hawks to a field goal and two free throws.

The Hawks rallied to cut the deficit to four, 67-63, with 5:53 left behind the shooting of freshman Jake Auer, who made a pair of threes in a 13-2 run over three-plus minutes.

The Bearcats scored 11 of the next 12 points to take 78-64 lead with 3:10. The Hawks could never get closer than 10 points in the final minutes.

Chris Hamil led Rockhurst with 24 points and six rebounds. He also made 11-of-12 free throws before fouling out with 1:19 left.

Quinton Curry posted 14 points, nine rebounds and three assists. Nick Volz scored 14 points on five-of-seven shooting. Auer added nine points on three 3-pointers. Curtis Lewis finished with seven points and three assists.

Bryson Bultman led McKendree with 20 points and four assists.

The Hawks (1-1) host William Jewell in their home opener on Thursday at 7:30 p.m.
