Hamil leads Hawks to first-ever win at Southern Indiana

Senior guard Chris Hamil keyed a second-half run to lead Rockhurst to a season-opening 81-70 victory over 25th-ranked Southern Indiana Friday in Evansville, Indiana.

The victory was the Hawks' third win over the Eagles and first-ever win at Southern Indiana since joining the Great Lakes Valley Conference in 2005.

Hamil's fourth 3-pointer of the day gave the Hawks a 65-55 lead with 9:21 left to play. The basket was part of a 10-0 run which put Rockhurst in front by 13 points, 68-55.

The Hawks came out red hot in the first half, hitting nine 3-pointers in taking a 38-17 lead with 6:39 left in the first half. The Eagles ended the first half on a 26-7 run to cut the Hawks' lead to 45-43 at halftime.

"Outstanding way to start the season," said Rockhurst coach Drew Diener. "We came out and really shot the ball well and defended at a high level. Our turnovers allowed them back into the game at the end of the first half."

Southern Indiana kept the score close for the first eight minutes of the second half. Quinton Curry's first basket of the game started the 10-0 run and a pair of free throws by Curry capped the run at the 8:17 mark.

The Hawks scored 13 of their last 17 points from the free-throw line. Rockhurst finished 15-of-23 from the foul line.

"We regrouped well in the second half and had several big plays late," Diener said. "Overall, I loved how we guarded and competed."

Hamil finished with a team-high 21 points on eight-of-11 field goal shooting. He scored 12 points in the first half on five-of-six shooting. He fouled out with 2:42 left with the Hawks in front, 74-63.
