Hawks fall short at Lewis after going on big second-half run

Rockhurst rallied from an insurmountable deficit in the second half to nearly pull off a road win over Lewis. The Flyers held off an amazing run by the Hawks for a 78-69 victory Thursday night in Romeoville, Illinois.

Down 54-29 at the 15:54 mark, the Hawks went on a 29-3 run over the next nine-plus minutes to take a 58-57 lead on a dunk shot by Quinton Curry at the 6:26 mark.

Lewis ended the game on an 11-3 run over the final 1:25. The Flyers made their last nine free throws to pull away in the final minute.

"I'm extremely proud of the character of this team," said Rockhurst coach Drew Diener. "These guys never stopped believing. Their approach was good from the start, but we struggled to make shots, finish and take care of the ball. That had our defense playing in transition a lot."

Curtis Lewis led the Hawks with 21 points, four rebounds and four steals. He scored 13 points in the second half, including seven points in a two-minute span.

Curry posted 20 points and 10 rebounds, including collecting 10 points in the 29-3 run. Chris Hamil added 14 points, four rebounds and three assists.

Rockhurst shot 43.5 percent from the field and 81.8 percent from the foul line. Lewis (7-5, 2-2 GLVC) shot 48.3 percent from the field and 81.8 percent at the charity stripe.

"Our strength right now is our toughness, which is a good thing," added Diener. "We will need it to bounce back on Saturday."

The Hawks (7-5, 3-1 GLVC) play at Illinois Springfield on Saturday.
