Hawks rally in second half for 68-54 road win

The Rockhurst Hawks dominated the second half to rally for a 68-54 victory at Illinois Springfield Saturday afternoon.

Down 40-30 at halftime, the Hawks outscored Springfield 38-14 in the final 20 minutes. Rockhurst held the Prairie Stars to 20-percent shooting (six of 30) in the second half.

The Hawks went on an 11-0 run to tie the score at 47-47 at the 13:11 mark. A 14-2 run gave Rockhurst a 64-52 lead with 2:43 left, culminating a 28-5 run.

"Again, I am proud of the character of our team," said Rockhurst coach Drew Diener. "When adversity hits, we come together. Our captains have made that part of our DNA."

Quinton Curry led the Hawks with 23 points and nine rebounds. He scored 13 points on six-of-nine shooting in the second half.
 
Curtis Lewis posted 13 points, eight rebounds, three assists and three steals. Chris Hamil tallied 12 points and five rebounds. Nick Volz added eight points and five rebounds.
 
Lewis, Hamil and Volz combined for 23 points and 13 rebounds in the second half. The Hawks made 13-of-28 field goals and outrebounded Springfield 23-14 after halftime.
 
"In the second half, our defense was great," added Diener. "We had contributions from so many guys."
 
Rockhurst (8-5, 4-1 GLVC) shot 40.6 percent from the field and 81.8 percent from the foul line. The Hawks scored 34 points in the paint and only committed six turnovers.
 
Springfield (9-4, 2-3 GLVC) shot 33.9 percent from the field and 50.0 percent at the charity stripe.

The Hawks return home to face Southern Indiana on Thursday.
