Defense leads Hawks to 56-53 win over Truman State

Curtis Lewis and Chris Hamil combined for 31 points to lead Rockhurst to a 56-53 victory over Truman State Saturday at RU's Mason-Halpin Field House.

Lewis scored 11 of his game-high 17 points in the second half. The junior guard made two free throws and a layup in the final 3:30 as the Hawks held off a late rally by the Bulldogs.

Hamil scored nine points on three 3-pointers in the first half to help give the Hawks a 29-23 halftime lead. The junior guard put Rockhurst in front for good at 48-45 with his fourth 3-pointer at the 7:34 mark and finished with 14 points.

Quinton Curry finished with 11 points, five rebounds and six steals. Nick Volz posted a team-high eight rebounds. Lewis added four rebounds, four assists and four steals.

"It was the definition of a grind game," said Rockhurst coach Drew Diener. "I thought defensively we were really good. (Truman) turned it over unofficially 10 of their last 20 possessions."

The Hawks held Truman's leading scorer, Brodric Thomas, to 16 points and scoreless in the first half on two field goal attempts.

Rockhurst shot 35.8 percent from the field and 70.6 percent from the foul line. Truman (6-5, 2-1 GLVC) shot 43.5 percent from the field and 50 percent at the charity stripe.

The Hawks (7-4, 3-0 GLVC) play at Lewis and Illinois Springfield next week.
