Second-half runs carry Truman past Rockhurst

Truman State broke away from Rockhurst after halftime to post an 81-60 victory over the Hawks Thursday night in Kirksville, Missouri.

The win for Truman avenged a 56-53 loss to the Hawks earlier this month at Rockhurst. The Bulldogs (13-6, 9-3 GLVC) took over sole possession of second place in the GLVC.

Truman scored 52 points in the second half on 60.7 percent shooting, while holding the Hawks 11 field goals on 40.7 percent shooting in the final 20 minutes.

"Credit to Truman's defense for the way they guarded us," said Rockhurst coach Drew Diener. "We knew it would be a defensive battle and they were just better than us tonight. Foul trouble in the first half hurt us."

The Bulldogs closed the first half on a 16-7 run to take a 29-24 halftime lead. Truman opened the second half on a 13-6 run to take a 42-30 lead with 14:34 left. The Bulldogs ended the game on a 22-11 run.

Quinton Curry led the Hawks with 14 points, three rebounds and four steals. Chris Hamil scored 13 points. Curtis Lewis collected nine points and two assists. Lasse Gummerus added seven points.

Rockhurst (12-7, 8-3 GLVC) shot 38.9 percent from the field and were limited to five-of-20 shooting from behind the 3-point line.

The Hawks next play at Quincy on Saturday.
