Late run leads Hawks past Maryville, 65-50

Rockhurst scored 12 unanswered points down the stretch to pull away for a 65-50 victory over Maryville Saturday at RU's Mason-Halpin Field House.

The Hawks, holding onto a 51-46 lead at the 8:10 mark, held Maryville scoreless for nearly seven minutes. A layup by Quinton Curry with 1:21 left gave the Hawks their biggest lead of the game at 63-46.

"I thought our defense was great today," said Rockhurst coach Drew Diener. "We had great hands and anticipation to get stops. I love that about our team."

Curry led the Hawks with 20 points (on nine-of-14 shooting), seven rebounds and two blocks. Nick Volz posted his third double-double of the season, scoring 11 points and grabbing 14 rebounds. Curry and Volz combined to make 14-of-23 field goals.

Chris Hamil scored 14 points behind three 3-pointers. Curtis Lewis collected 11 points, nine rebounds and three assists. Hamil and Lewis combined to score 14 of the Hawks' 35 second-half points.
 
Rockhurst (12-6, 8-2 GLVC) shot 47.2 percent from the field and 52.4 percent on free throws. The Hawks also hit four of 19 three-point shots.
 
The Saints (4-13, 0-10 GLVC) shot 43.8 percent from the field and 33.3 percent from behind the three-point line.

The Hawks play at Truman State on Thursday.
