Hawks down Miners; Curry passes 1,000 career points

Quinton Curry became the second Hawk to join the 1,000-point club as Rockhurst pulled away down the stretch for a 78-67 victory over Missouri S&T Thursday night in Rolla, Missouri.

Curry posted his fifth double-double of the season, scoring 19 points and grabbing 10 rebounds. The junior forward has now scored 1,005 points over the past three seasons. Junior guard Curtis Lewis went over 1,000 career points in December.

Nick Volz led the Hawks with 21 points and eight rebounds. Volz made nine-of-10 field goals. Lewis collected 17 points and eight rebounds. Chris Hamil added 15 points and five rebounds.

"That's a great conference road win for our team," said Rockhurst coach Drew Diener. "S&T has some talent. They made threes early to get them going and gain confidence."

The Miners went on 14-3 run to take a 33-31 lead late in the first half. Hamil drained two treys in the final 40 seconds to give the Hawks a 38-35 halftime lead.

Rockhurst opened up a 10-point lead at 61-51 at the 7:29 mark after going on a 17-7 run over seven minutes. Lewis and Volz combined for 12 points in the run. The Hawks scored their last nine points of the game at the foul line.

"I thought our guys stayed poise throughout that game and the run we made in the second half proves enough. The jumpers that Hamil made going into the half were also big from a momentum standpoint," added Diener.

Rockhurst (11-6, 7-2 GLVC) shot 46.2 percent from the field and 81.4 percent on free throws. The Hawks also hit eight of 22 three-point shots.

The Miners (4-11, 2-7 GLVC) shot 40.9 percent from the field and 29.2 percent from behind the three-point line.

The Hawks return to host Maryville on Saturday (3 p.m.).
