Southern Indiana holds off Hawks down the stretch

Southern Indiana held Rockhurst to two field goals over the final five and a half minutes in holding for a 70-62 victory over the Hawks Thursday night at RU's Mason-Halpin Field House.

The Hawks pulled within three points of the Screaming Eagles four different times in the last six minutes. After Thomas Faber's 3-pointer got the Hawks to within 59-56 at the 5:48 mark, Rockhurst only made two of its final 11 shots.

A Chris Hamil layup with 54 seconds left cut USI's lead to 65-62. The Hawks missed their last three shots of the game while the Eagles scored five points on a field goal and three free throws.

"We are struggling to score at a high level right now, which is putting a lot of pressure on every other aspect of the game," said Rockhurst coach Drew Diener, whose Hawks were held to 26 points in the first half on 11-of-30 shooting.

"I believe our guys are competing hard.  We need to clean some things up offensively. We aren't playing our best on that end of the floor. Our best basketball is ahead of us."

Lasse Gummerus led the Hawks by matching his season-high in points (14) and grabbing five rebounds. The junior forward connected on four-of-nine 3-point field goals.

Nick Volz posted 11 points and eight rebounds. Curtis Lewis tallied 11 points, four rebounds and six assists. Hamil added 10 points and five rebounds. Quinton Curry finished with eight points and nine rebounds.

Rockhurst (8-6, 4-2 GLVC) shot 37.5 percent from the field and 28.6 percent on 3-pointers. USI (10-4, 2-4 GLVC) shot 45.9 percent from the field and 61.1 percent at the charity stripe.
