Three-point shooting leads Hawks over McKendree

Rockhurst connected on 14 three-point field goals while shooting 58.3 percent from the field in posting an 82-79 victory over McKendree Saturday at RU's Mason-Halpin Field House.

Curtis Lewis led the Hawks with 30 points and eight assists. The junior guard broke the school record for career assists (302). Lewis made nine-of-11 field goals and sank 10-of-13 free throws.

Chris Hamil scored 21 points on seven-of-13 shooting. The junior guard led the Hawks with five three-pointers. Freshman Thomas Faber came off the bench to score a career-high 16 points behind four three-pointers. Walt Eckelkamp added nine points on three treys.

The Hawks jumped out to a 46-34 halftime lead while canning nine-of-15 three-pointers. Lewis and Hamil combined for 25 points in the first half.

McKendree crept back into the game after falling behind 57-40 with 15:39 left in the second half. The Bearcats used a pair of 8-0 runs to cut the Hawks' lead to six, 62-56, at the 9:00 mark.

Lewis scored nine points in the final three minutes, including five free throws in the last 20 seconds, as the Hawks held off McKendree down the stretch.

Rockhurst (9-6, 5-2 GLVC) shot 56.0 percent on three-pointers and 66.7 percent on free throws. McKendree (9-6, 4-3 GLVC) shot 51.9 percent from the field and 43.5 percent from behind the three-point line.

The Hawks host William Jewell Monday night.
