Hawks drop season opener at No. 3 Fort Hays State

Fort Hays State scored in the 16th minute and added two second-half goals in posting a 3-0 season-opening victory over Rockhurst Thursday night in Hays, Kansas.

The third-ranked Tigers finished with 23 shots, including 15 in the first half. Rockhurst goalkeeper Peter Baker stopped eight of Fort Hays State's shots.

Senior defender Joey McCain scored the first goal of the game off a corner kick with a shot into the right bottom corner of the net. Sergio Villalba made it 2-0 early in the second half and Alonzo Rodriguez added the Tigers' final goal in the 76th  minute.

Rockhurst posted 10 of its 13 shots in the second half. Freshman midfielder Adam Burnett led the Hawks with five shots. Reserves Connor Blentlinger and Preston Mboob added two shots apiece.

The Hawks (0-1) started the game with six freshmen and one junior-college transfer. Only three of RU's starters played for the Hawks last year.

Rockhurst will host Rogers State in its home opener Sunday afternoon at Bourke Field.
