Hurricane Dorian forces Hawks to open season in Texas

Instead of opening the season in Florida, the 14th-ranked Rockhurst volleyball team will start off the 2019 season in Texas.

Rockhurst was forced to find a new tournament on Monday after the Bahama House Classic in Daytona Beach, Florida was cancelled due to Hurricane Dorian.

The Hawks, 32-7 in 2018, are one of five nationally-ranked teams that will participate in the Texan Invitational at Tarleton State University in Stephenville, Texas.

Rockhurst will open its season on Friday against West Alabama at 9 a.m. The Hawks will face 19th-ranked Cal State-Los Angeles at 4:30 p.m. on Friday. West Alabama and Cal State-LA both won 22 matches last year.

On Saturday, Rockhurst will face No. 10 Tarleton State at 11:30 a.m. and will conclude tournament play at 7 p.m. against sixth-ranked Minnesota-Duluth, a team that went 28-6 last season and reached the second round of the NCAA Central Regional.

Rockhurst's first four opponents this week had a combined record of 104-28 in 2018. Tarleton State finished 32-6 and captured its first NCAA Regional title in school history.

The Hawks were scheduled to face Seton Hill, Embry-Riddle, West Alabama and Davis & Elkins in Daytona Beach, Florida.
