Hawks post extra inning victory over SLU Billikens

Freshman right-hander Thomas Jones shut down Saint Louis on zero hits over five innings to lead Rockhurst to a 5-4 victory in 13 innings over the Billikens Tuesday night on the SLU campus.

Jones entered the game with no outs and the bases loaded in the bottom of the ninth with the score tied 4-4. He got out of the inning with a double play grounder and strikeout. He retired 14 of the last 15 hitters to win his second game of the season.

The Hawks scored the winning run on a bases loaded walk to Tommy Kraus with no outs in the top of the 13th. Alex Van Pelt and Garrett McNally both singled around a walk to Michael Ruffolo to load the bases.

Van Pelt gave Rockhurst a 4-2 lead in the seventh with an RBI single. The Billikens scored on a double in the eighth and a wild pitch in the ninth to tie the score.

Nathan Mark singled home a run in the first and Eric Kuse had an RBI double in the second. Mark, Kuse, Van Pelt, Kraus and McNally each finished with two hits as the Hawks outhit SLU, 12-6.

The Hawks came into the game coming off a 12-2 loss at Lewis on Monday. The Flyers scored eight runs in the seventh and eighth to end the game after eight innings.

Rockhurst (9-27, 5-19 GLVC) return home to host Maryville in a doubleheader on Friday afternoon.
