Hawks look to get over the hump in home games

Freshman Meghan Urbanski has started the past six games at point guard for the Hawks.
The Rockhurst women's basketball team returns home this week for a pair of GLVC contests -- Thursday vs. Illinois Springfield at 5:30 p.m. and Saturday vs. McKendree at 1:00 p.m. The Hawks fought hard in road games at Missouri-St. Louis and Maryville last week, but couldn't quite finish the job as both resulted in narrow defeats.

Briahtia Sebek has been on fire, averaging 18.5 points per game in the Hawks' last four contests, including a scorching 80 percent from 3-point range (16-for-20). She's up to a GLVC-best 49.3 percent from the 3-point line on the year.

Madeline Ronshausen continues to be a consistent scorer, ranking third in the conference at 17.0 ppg. She's third in the GLVC in 3-pointers made per game (2.26), and ranks eighth in both free throw percentage (83.8) and 3-point percentage (39.4).

Freshman point guard Meghan Urbanski has seen an increase in minutes for Coach Larry Park's club. Her steady play has helped the Hawks cut back on turnovers, an area that had been hurting the team earlier in the season.

Illinois Springfield enters the Hawks Nest with a record of 7-12 (4-7 GLVC). The Prairie Stars score 70.5 points per game and are allowing 70.2 pg. Of their 12 losses, five have been by six points or fewer. Springfield spreads the ball around with four players averaging in double figures: Lauren Ladowski (13.2 pg), Jasmine Sangster (12.5 pg), Tehya Fortune (11.2 pg) and Val Meissner (10.9 pg). The Stars attempt nearly 20 free throws a game and shoot a GLVC-best 76.8 percent from the line. Defending without fouling and securing rebounds will be key for Rockhurst Thursday night.

McKendree vistis Mason-Halpin Field House Saturday. The Bearcats are 11-9 (5-6 GLVC) heading into their Thursday game at William Jewell. It will be a contrast of styles Saturday, as the Bearcats prefer to slow the game down, scoring 65.9 per game and allowing 63.7 pg, while the Hawks like to get out and run when they get the chance.

The Bearcats are one of the better rebounding teams in the league with a per game margin of plus-3.8 (fifth in the GLVC). Offensively, McKendree is led by Sydney Diekhoff (14.2 pg), with strong contributions from Jordan Heberg (10.7 pg) and Megan Jensen (9.6 pg) as well.

Both games will be streaming on glvcsn.com and the GLVCSN mobile app. Live stats are available here on rockhursthawks.com. Thursday is Aluimni Night at the Ball Game and Jam the Gym night for students. Se details here: https://ww2.rockhurst.edu/alumni-night-basketball-game-2019
