Avila rallies for 80-78 victory over Hawks

Avila's Shandon Boone made a layup with six seconds left to give the Eagles an 80-78 victory over Rockhurst Monday at RU's Mason-Halpin Field House.

Boone's basket capped a 13-6 run for Avila over the final five-and-a-half minutes. Boone finished with a game-high 30 points.

"We were not solid tonight," said Rockhurst coach Drew Diener. "We had poor decision making on offense and overall poor execution on both ends of the floor. Usually we are sharper and anticipate better on defense."

Curtis Lewis led the Hawks with 24 points, seven rebounds, six assists and three steals. Lewis scored 21 points in the second half and gave the Hawks a 72-67 lead with 5:51 left in the game.

Nick Volz totaled 12 points and eight rebounds. Thomas Faber scored 12 points with three 3-pointers. Quinton Curry posted 10 points, four assists and three steals. Lasse Gummerus and Chris Hamil each tallied nine points on three 3-pointers.

Rockhurst shot 50.9 percent from the field, while Avila connected on 56.6 percent of its field goals. The Hawks turned the ball over 15 times leading to 23 Avila points.

"We can beat anyone, but our margin for error is slim due to our inability to consistently not give the ball away due to our susceptibility to turn the ball over," Diener said.

The Hawks (4-4) host Missouri Western at 1 p.m. Saturday.
