Lewis leads Hawks to 87-75 win over Missouri Western

Curtis Lewis scored a season-high 30 points to lead Rockhurst to an 87-75 victory over Missouri Western Saturday at RU's Mason-Halpin Field House.

Lewis connected on 10-of-14 field goals and made all three of his 3-point field goals. The junior guard scored 21 points in the first half to help give the Hawks a 49-41 halftime lead.

Quinton Curry posted 20 points, nine rebounds, four assists and four blocked shots. Nick Volz tallied 17 points on eight-of-12 shooting. Chris Hamil added 11 points.

"I thought we had some really nice offensive performances, especially in the first half," said Rockhurst coach Drew Diener. "Curtis was impressive in the first half. When we needed baskets, Quinton and Nick in the second half were able to play on-on-one inside and make really nice plays."

Rockhurst shot 58.9 percent from the field, while holding Western (4-8) to 43.9 percent shooting. The Hawks outscored the Griffons, 54-36, in the paint.

The Hawks (5-4, 1-0 GLVC) return to conference play on Thursday, Jan. 2 when they host Quincy on Jan. 2.

"Quincy is a team that we are familiar with playing as we've played them twice a year in the last few years so our guys know their players," Diener said. "We are a little disappointed being 5-4 right now. On the flip side, we've got the conference season ahead of us and we played really well in our other conference game (a win at William Jewell on Dec. 3)."
