Hawks drop opener in overtime at Davenport

Rockhurst fell short of winning its season opener, dropping an 85-79 decision in overtime to 22nd-ranked Davenport in the GLIAC/GLVC Challenge Friday in Grand Rapids, Michigan.

Davenport rallied late in regulation to force overtime and took the lead for good with 1:32 left in the extra session. The Panthers (2-1) made five of six free throws in the final 23 seconds in OT.

Curtis Lewis sank two free throws with 2:16 left in the second half to give the Hawks a 66-61 lead with 2:16 left in the second half. He added two free throws with 28 seconds left to put Rockhurst in front, 68-66.

Lewis, who made his first 17 free throws, missed his first free throw with five seconds left with the Hawks leading 69-67. The Panthers' Chris Rollins made a driving layup with two seconds left to tie the score.

"Until we can take care of the ball at a high level, we will experience limited success," said coach Drew Diener, whose team committed 18 turnovers that led to 21 Davenport points.

Lewis led the Hawks with 28 points and five rebounds. Quinton Curry posted 18 points and 14 rebounds.

Freshman Thomas Faber tallied nine points and four rebounds. Chris Hamil scored eight points. Nick Volz added seven points, eight rebounds, three assists and two steals.

The Hawks shot 46.2 percent from the field (24 of 52) and 89.7 percent from the foul line (26 of 29). The Panthers shot 44.3 percent from the field and 72.4 percent on free throws.

The Hawks (0-1) play Purdue Northwest on Saturday in Grand Rapids.
