Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Rockhurst falls to Purdue Northwest, 71-67

Rockhurst suffered its second loss in two days at the season-opening GLIAC/GLVC Challenge Saturday in Grand Rapids, Michigan.

Purdue Northwest rallied from a seven-point deficit in the second half to post a 71-67 victory over the Hawks.

The Pride went on a 26-12 run to take a 64-57 lead with three minutes remaining. Rockhurst never got closer than four points the rest of the way.

"We lack consistency in most aspects of the game," said Rockhurst coach Drew Diener. "Our desire is to become a team that plays smart and executes; we are further away from that than I thought prior to heading into the weekend. Our guys have responded to adversity before, which gives me confidence moving forward."

Nick Volz led the Hawks with 16 points and 11 rebounds. The sophomore forward scored on a three-point play to give Rockhurst a 45-38 lead with 15:08 left in the second half.

Junior transfer Lasse Gummerus came off the bench to score 14 points behind four 3-point field goals. Quinton Curry posted 10 points, five rebounds and three steals. Curtis Lewis totaled 10 points and four rebounds. Chris Hamil and Thomas Faber combined for 15 points.

The Hawks shot 43.9 percent from the field (25 of 57) and 71.4 percent from the foul line (10 of 14). The Pride shot 45.8 percent from the field and 58.3 percent on free throws.

Rockhurst (0-2) will host Washburn in its home opener Friday night.
