Hawks fall to Northeastern State in MIAA Challenge

Northeastern State put a sudden halt to Rockhurst's two-game winning streak. The RiverHawks from Tahlequah, Oklahoma took the lead for good midway through the second half in posting a 78-69 victory over Rockhurst in the MIAA Thanksgiving Challenge Tuesday at Kansas City's Municipal Auditorium.

Rockhurst opened the second half on a 10-5 run to tie the score at 43-all with 12:43 remaining. Quinton Curry and Curtis Lewis combined for five field goals to rally the Hawks from a 38-33 halftime deficit.

Northeastern State countered with a 12-5 run over the next two minutes to take a 55-48 lead. The Hawks never got closer than five points over the final 10 minutes.

"I didn't think we were very good defensively. They drove it down our throats," said Rockhurst coach Drew Diener. "They are a really good offensive team. They have some good upper-class guards who are hard to guard. We needed to find a way to contain those guys better."

Curry led the Hawks with 20 points, 10 rebounds and five assists. Lewis tallied 15 points, seven rebounds and five assists. Curry and Lewis combined for 15-of-29 shooting from the field. The rest of the team shot 12 of 35 from the field (34.3 percent).

Chris Hamil finished with 15 points while hitting four-of-seven 3-point field goals. The rest of the Hawks were four-of-18 from behind the arc (22.2 percent).

Overall, Rockhurst shot 42.2 percent from the field and 29.6 percent on 3-point field goals. Northeastern State hit 54.5 percent from the field and 38.1 percent on 3-pointers.

The Hawks (2-3) will take a short break before opening conference play at William Jewell on Tuesday, Dec. 3. After Jewell, Rockhurst will play its next five games at home.

"We saw Jewell up in Michigan (two weeks ago). They beat Purdue Northwest, who beat us. They are off to a good start and have a good team. Getting a win in our first conference game and sitting at 1-0 is where we need to be," Diener said.
