Rockhurst rolls past Jewell, 79-48, in GLVC opener

Rockhurst jumped out to a 20-point halftime lead in rolling to a 79-48 victory over William Jewell in a GLVC opener for both schools Tuesday night in Liberty, Missouri.

The Hawks connected on 17-of-30 field goals in the first half to take a 43-23 lead into intermission. Freshman guard Thomas Faber came off the bench to score 13 points behind three 3-pointers in the first half.

"The offense was great obviously," said Rockhurst coach Drew Diener. "We shot the three really well and made free throws. We played a lot of inside-out game. We had a lot of contributions from guys off the bench coming in and making shots."

Curtis Lewis and Quinton Curry led the Hawks with 16 points apiece. Lewis also posted seven assists, four rebounds and four steals. Curry made seven-of-12 shots while grabbing five rebounds.

Faber finished with 13 points and four rebounds. Nick Volz totaled 12 points and nine rebounds. Chris Hamil added nine points. Lasse Gummerus and Charlton Offermans combined for 11 rebounds.

Rockhurst shot 49.1 percent from the field, while holding Jewell to 32.1 percent field goal accuracy. Eysan Wiley led the Cardinals with 23 points and seven rebounds.

"I thought we were outstanding defensively to start the game and not giving them what they like to run," Diener added. "Wiley is a nice player, but we made it tough on him. We were considerably better today on both sides of the ball."

The Hawks (3-3, 1-0 GLVC) return home on Friday, Dec. 13 to face Manhattan Christian College.
