Big shots lift Hawks to road win at Emporia State

Chris Hamil drained two of his game-high six 3-pointers in the second overtime to lead Rockhurst to a 109-100 victory over Emporia State Friday night at White Auditorium in Emporia, Kansas.

Hamil, who finished with 20 points, gave the Hawks a 99-98 lead with 3:19 left in the second OT. He gave Rockhurst a 104-100 lead with another 3-pointer at the 2:09 mark.

Curtis Lewis added five three throws in the final minute to secure the Hawks' second consecutive win and first road victory of the season.

"We showed great toughness in that game, especially the second half and overtimes," said Rockhurst coach Drew Diener. "There were several times where we were down but we stayed poised, positive and together. I am most proud of that.

"We had several guys make big shots. It was a great road win for our program."

Quinton Curry led the Hawks with 27 points, eight rebounds and six assists. Lewis posted 24 points, 10 rebounds, five steals and three assists. Nick Volz added 26 points, seven rebounds and three assists.

Volz made a game-tying layup with six seconds left in regulation to force the first overtime period. A Curry layup tied the game at 94-all with six seconds left in the first overtime.

The Hawks shot 51.1 percent from the field (38 of 73) and 46.2 percent from behind the 3-point line (12 of 26). Emporia State shot 47.4 percent from the field (36 of 76) and 37.1 percent on 3-point field goals (13 of 35).

The Hawks (2-2) play Northeastern State (Okla.) on Tuesday (3:45 pm.) at Kansas City's Municipal Auditorium.
