Curtis Lewis made two driving layups in the final two minutes and finished with 25 points and three steals to lead Rockhurst past Drury, 62-60, Saturday at Mason-Halpin Field House.
The win was the Hawks' first triumph over Drury since Jan. 2, 2011 and ended a 14-game losing streak to the Panthers.
"That was a great team win today," said Rockhurst coach
Drew Diener. "Curtis clearly had a great game from a stat standpoint and I thought we had great contributions from the bench as well."
Lewis scored the first 10 points of the game for Rockhurst as the Hawks jumped out to a 10-2 lead in the first four minutes. The sophomore guard scored 16 points in the first 20 minutes to help give Rockhurst a 29-28 halftime lead.
The Hawks went on a 13-3 run in the second half to go from four down (43-39) to six up (52-46) with 6:06 left to play.
Auston Rushing hit two 3-point shots to key the run.
Lewis gave Rockhurst a 56-51 lead with a layup at the 1:49 mark and added another layup with 21 seconds left to put Rockhurst in front 60-57.
Eddie Muench iced the win with two free throws with four seconds remaining.
Muench scored eight points, while
Chris Hamil tallied seven points and three rebounds.
Quinton Curry and
Nick Volz both finished with six points and six rebounds.
Rockhurst shot 45.3 percent from the field (24 of 53) and hit seven of 22 3-point shots (31.8 percent). Conley Garrison led Drury (7-7. 1-2 GLVC) with 17 points. The Panthers shot 41.5 percent from the field (22 of 53).
"Our defense was really good tonight. The guys have committed to that end of the floor. Drury has a really good offensive team. It is a great win for our program," added Diener.
The Hawks (8-5, 3-1 GLVC) host Kansas Christian College at noon on Tuesday.
