Rockhurst holds off Miners for 72-69 win at home

Rockhurst held off Missouri S&T by making six free throws in the final 29 seconds in posting a 72-69 victory over the Miners Thursday night at Mason-Halpin Field House.

Eddie Muench connected on two foul shots to give the Hawks a three-point lead, 71-68, with eight seconds left. He added another charity toss with four seconds left.

Muench led the Hawks with 18 points on six-of-12 shooting. He scored 11 points in the first half as Rockhurst went into halftime trailing 43-39.

"I don't think that was the prettiest game offensively for us, but we were able to really buckle down in the second half and defend them to find a way to win that game," said Rockhurst coach Drew Diener.

The Hawks held Missouri S&T to 26 points in the second half on nine-of-31 shooting. Rockhurst took its first lead of the second half at 48-47 on a layup by Conner Evans at the 13:46 mark. Chris Hamil drained a 3-pointer to give the Hawks a 66-61 lead with 2:07 left.

Hamil finished with 15 points on five-of-10 shooting. Curtis Lewis posted 10 points on four-of-10 shooting. Nick Volz tallied eight points, eight rebounds and seven assists. Evans added seven points and nine rebounds.

"I thought Nick Volz gave us a huge lift with his cutting passing and offensive rebounding that made a huge difference in the game," Diener said.

Rockhurst shot 41.3 percent from the field (26 of 63) and hit 16 of 21 free throws (76.2 percent). Dulan Scott led S&T (2-9) with 22 points. The Miners shot 41.3 percent from the field (26 of 63).

"We have been in a lot of these close games now this year and I think if we continue to value the basketball throughout the game is going to be key for our success," added Diener.

The Hawks (7-5, 2-1 GLVC) host Drury on Saturday.
