Flyers turn back Rockhurst comeback effort

The Lewis Flyers survived two go-ahead shots by Rockhurst in the final 30 seconds to edge the Hawks, 73-70, Saturday in Romeoville, Illinois.

The Hawks battled back from 13 points down (53-40) with 11:38 left in the game. A layup by Quinton Curry with 52 seconds remaining cut the Lewis lead to 71-70.

Chris Hamil and Curtis Lewis both had chances to give Rockhurst the lead following a 3-point miss by the Flyers with 42 seconds left. Hamil's layup was blocked out of bounds at the :30 second mark, while Curtis Lewis missed a short jumper with 12 seconds left.

"We battle; I love that about our team," said Rockhurst coach Drew Diener. "We compete hard. Their team outplayed us today. Give them credit."

Hamill led the Hawks (10-9, 4-5 GLVC) with 20 points on eight-of-15 shooting. He scored 13 points in the second half and made two 3-pointers during the Hawks' late rally.

Curtis Lewis tallied 12 points, five rebounds and four assists. Eddie Muench scored 11 points behind three 3-point field goals. Curry posted 10 points and four rebounds. Connor Evans added eight points, five rebounds and three assists.

"I know our guys are trying not to turn it over, but it continues to hurt us in these one-possession games," added Diener. "It hasn't been an easy fix for us. We will keep working at it. I believe we have the leadership to turn this stretch around."

Rockhurst committed 14 turnovers while shooting 43.1 percent from the field (25 of 58). The Flyers outrebounded the Hawks, 31-30.

Anthony D'Avanzo led Lewis (13-4, 5-3 GLVC) with 18 points on nine-of-11 shooting. The Flyers shot 50.0 percent from the field (27 of 54).
