Strong first half carries UMSL past Hawks

All five starters scored in double figures for Missouri-St. Louis to lead the Tritons to a 75-59 victory over Rockhurst Thursday night on the UMSL campus in St. Louis.

The Tritons jumped out to a 32-19 halftime lead while holding Rockhurst to 6-of-21 shooting (28.6 percent) in the first half.

Rockhurst opened the second half on an 18-11 run to pull within six points (43-37) with 13 minutes left in the game. UMSL scored 11 of the next 14 points over the next five minutes to grab a 54-40 lead.

Curtis Lewis led the Hawks (10-10, 4-6 GLVC) with 17 points (seven-of-14 field goals) and six rebounds. He scored 13 points in the second half as the Hawks scored 40 points after halftime. Chris Hamil and Tyler Garrett both finished with nine points.

Rockhurst shot 37.3 percent from the field (19 of 51). The Tritons outrebounded the Hawks, 41-25.

Johnathan Matthews led UMSL (15-4, 6-3 GLVC) with 17 points on seven-of-10 shooting. The Tritons shot 52.7 percent from the field (29 of 55).
