Indianapolis edges Hawks on shot at the buzzer

The Rockhurst Hawks led Indianapolis for 28 minutes only to fall to the Greyhounds, 68-66, on a fadeaway jump shot at the buzzer by guard CJ Hardaway Thursday night in Indianapolis.

Indianapolis rallied from a 50-39 deficit with 12:48 left in the second half. The Greyhounds proceeded to go on a 23-6 run to take a six-point lead (62-56) at the 5:27 mark.

Nick Volz capped a 10-2 run by Rockhurst with a layup with 1:12 left to play, giving the Hawks a 66-64 lead. Volz tied the score at 64-all on a traditional three-point play at the 3:19 mark.

A jumper in the paint by Indy's Hardaway knotted the score at 66 with 56 seconds left before the Hawks turned the ball over at the :31 second mark.

Volz finished with a career-high 30 points and 12 rebounds. The freshman forward scored 15 points in both halves while connecting on 13 of 16 field goals.

Chris Hamil posted 14 points behind four 3-pointers. Curtis Lewis tallied eight points, three rebounds and three assists. Connor Evans added six rebounds and five steals.

"Until we stop turning the ball over so much, we will continue to underachieve," said Rockhurst coach Drew Diener. "We have made that a point of emphasis for two months now and continue to have high turnover games. It's very frustrating."

Rockhurst committed 16 turnovers while shooting 45.8 percent from the field (29 of 57). The Hawks outrebounded the Greyhounds, 34-31.

Hardaway led Indy (12-5, 5-2 GLVC) with 28 points on 12-of-13 shooting. The Greyhounds shot 50.0 percent from the field (28 of 56).
