Rockhurst outshot No. 1-ranked Bellarmine from the field, but the Knights dominated at the foul line to escape with an 82-71 victory over the Hawks Saturday at Mason-Halpin Field House.
The Hawks connected on 51.7 of their field goals (30 of 58), while holding the Knights to 46.2 percent shooting from the field (24 of 52).
"We had great fight today and executed our game plan quite well," said Rockhurst coach
Drew Diener. "They are tough to defend. In my opinion, we made things tough on them. We fouled too often, which allowed them to get to the line often and they made their free throws."
Bellarmine connected on 28-of-32 free throws, including hitting 19-of-22 charity shots in the second half. Rockhurst finished eight-of-15 from the foul line.
"We had an off-night shooting from the perimeter (three of 19 on 3-pointers), but took good shots. Our guys rose to the challenge from a physicality standpoint," added Diener.
Quinton Curry led the Hawks with 21 points (on eight-of-13 shooting) and seven rebounds.
Chris Hamil scored 16 points on eight-of-16 shooting.
Curtis Lewis tallied 14 points and three assists.
Nick Volz posted 13 points and seven rebounds.
Rockhurst outrebounded the Knights, 33-28. Curry, Volz and
Connor Evans combined for 20 rebounds.
Adam Eberhard led Bellarmine (16-0, 7-0 GLVC) with a career-high 33 points.
