Rockhurst connected on 12 shots from beyond the 3-point arc and dominated the boards in cruising to an 88-75 victory over William Jewell Saturday at Mason-Halpin Field House.
The win improves the Hawks to 10-5 overall and 4-1 in the GLVC standings for the first time since 2009.
Rockhurst jumped out to a 44-22 halftime lead while hitting 10-of-21 3-point shots. The Hawks widened its lead to 28 (68-40) with 9:50 left in the game.
Chris Hamil led the Hawks with 23 points on eight-of-17 shooting. The sophomore guard connected on five of his first six 3-point shots to give Rockhurst a 17-3 lead in the first four minutes of the game.
"We came out with a great defensive mindset," said Rockhurst coach
Drew Diener. "I was thrilled with our mentality to stop those guys. They have some great offensive players and are a challenge to contain.
"We shared the ball well again on the offensive end. I am most proud with our guys determination to compete today. It is fun to watch."
Three Hawks finished with double-doubles in scoring and rebounding.
Curtis Lewis posted 17 points while having team highs in rebounds (12) and assists (6).
Quinton Curry tallied 15 points and 10 rebounds.
Connor Evans collected 10 points and 11 rebounds.
Nick Volz added eight points, seven rebounds and five assists.
Rockhurst shot 46.2 percent from the field (30 of 65) and hit 12 of 31 3-point field goals (38.7 percent). The Hawks outrebounded Jewell, 56-32, including grabbing 13 offensive rebounds.
Byron Harp led Jewell (8-8, 2-3 GLVC) with 20 points. The Cardinals shot 37.3 percent from the field (28 of 75).
