Rockhurst, Quincy play to 2-2 deadlock in GLVC opener

Rockhurst opened conference play with a 2-2 draw against Quincy Friday night at Bourke Field. The tie puts the Rockhurst Hawks at 1-2-1 (0-0-1 GLVC) on the season.

The RU Hawks drew first blood when Marco Cora poked in a rebound from six yards out in the seventh minute.

Aubrey Reis fired back for Quincy, bending in a corner kick to level the score in the 13th minute, then burying a penalty kick minutes later after a Rockhurst foul in the box.

The visitors maintained that 2-1 advantage until a Pablo Salvador Lopez equalizer in the 74th minute. The low rocket from 18 yards out was too hot to handle for the Quincy keeper.

Rockhurst utshot Quincy 16-11 on the night, including 6-1 in extra time, but were unable to capitalize on the late chances. Three Rockhurst Hawks tied with a team-high three shots – Salvador Lopez, Noah Mabry and Chandler Peterson. Nick Randazzo had two saves in his first career start for the Hawks, including a clutch kick save late in the second half to preserve the tie.

The Rockhurst men will be back in action Sunday at 2:30 p.m. when they play host to Illinois Springfield.
