The 10th-ranked Rockhurst volleyball team opened the 2018 season with a 3-0 victory in the Lady Buff Classic over Lubbock Christian (25-19, 25-11, 25-19) Friday in Canyon, Texas.
Junior outside hitter Alyssa Woodman led a balanced hitting attack with 11 kills. Audrey Arand and Karli Reichert combined for 15 kills, while Emily Matio and Emma Kriete tacked on another 11 kills.
Reichert collected a team-high 11 digs and Kalie Arnold tallied 10 digs in her first career start at libero. Sophomore setter Dani Prusha paced the Hawks with 18 assists. Freshman setter Gabbie Inman added 16 assists in her first collegiate match.
"I thought we made too many mistakes. We gave them some points off missed serves. I'm glad we got rid of our jitters in this match,"Â said Rockhurst coach Tracy Rietzke.
Set One: Rockhurst 25, Lubbock Christian 19
The Hawks closed out the opening set on a 10-2 run to rally from a 17-15 deficit. Lubbock Christian aided the Rockhurst comeback by committing five hitting errors. Prusha served out the set with four winning points.
Set Two: Rockhurst 25, Lubbock Christian 11
Rockhurst jumped out to a 7-3 lead and never looked back. The Hawks posted 14 kills and only four hitting errors. Woodman led the way with five kills.
Set Three: Rockhurst 25, Lubbock Christian 19
Down 13-12, the Hawks scored the next three points behind LCU errors on the way to ending the set on a 13-6 run. Reichert and Woodman ended the match with kills off passes from Prusha.
Player of the Match
Audrey Arand. The sophomore from Union, Missouri finished with eight kills at a .600 hitting percentage and four blocks (tying a career-high). She had four kills and two blocks in the third set.
