Near sellout crowd watch Hawks edge Benedictine

Chris Hamil knocked down a go-ahead 3-pointer with 1:40 left to lead Rockhurst to a 75-69 victory over Benedictine Wednesday night in front of a near sellout crowd at Mason-Halpin Field House.

Hamil's 3-pointer gave the Hawks a 70-67 lead in a game that featured 10 lead changes. Curtis Lewis hit a driving layup to put Rockhurst in front 72-67 with 51 seconds remaining and the Hawks hit three-of-four free throws in the final 21 seconds.

"I thought our student body and Rockhurst fans that showed up tonight gave us an incredible atmosphere and gave us a lift that helped us win that game," said Rockhurst coach Drew Diener. "The other thing that was impressive with this game was only having nine turnovers, which has been a huge focus for us in the last few weeks."

Hamil led the Hawks with 18 points (on seven-of-16 shooting) and four rebounds. Quinton Curry finished with 13 points and five rebounds. Nick Volz posted 11 points and seven rebounds.

Eddie Muench and Auston Rushing came off the bench to each score nine points on three 3-pointers. Tyler Garrett tallied eight points, four steals and three assists. Lewis added six points, five assists and seven rebounds.

The Hawks led by six at halftime (38-32), while the Ravens opened the second half on a 16-4 run to take a 48-42 lead with 12:45 left. Rockhurst went on a 16-5 run to go in front by five, 58-53, at the 8:19 mark.

"I was really proud of the way we responded in that second half," added Diener. "Things were not going our way and they were making shots, and we really needed to find a way to get the momentum back. Nick Volz made a big play that I think lifted us."

Rockhurst shot 44.4 percent from the field (28 of 63) and hit 12 of 28 three-pointers (42.9 percent). Adam Kutney led the Ravens (9-2) with 17 points. Benedictine shot 47.2 percent from the field (25 of 53).

The Hawks (5-3, 1-1 GLVC) next host Emporia State on Dec. 15.
