Hawks fall short at home against Newman in OT

The Newman Jets connected on 25-of-33 free throws to edge Rockhurst in overtime, 85-81, Saturday at Mason-Halpin Field House.

Rockhurst had a chance to win the game at the end of regulation, but Chris Hamil missed a game-winning shot with two seconds left. Newman's Ben Ayre hit a 3-pointer with nine seconds left to tie the score at 74-all.

Eddie Muench made two free throws to give the Hawks a 76-74 lead in overtime. Quinton Curry hit a jumper with 3:25 left to put Rockhurst back in front by two at 78-76. Newman then went on an 8-3 run to take an 84-79 lead with 29.8 seconds left.

Muench, Curry and Hamil led the Hawks with 17 points apiece. Muench made four consecutive free throws to give the Hawks a 74-71 lead with 14.6 seconds left in regulation. Two of the free throws came after a technical foul was called on Newman's Ayre with 15.9 seconds left.

Curry scored 16 points after halftime before fouling out in overtime. Hamil scored 11 points in the second half as the Hawks rallied from a 36-31 halftime deficit.

Connor Evans led the Hawks with 12 rebounds and two blocked shots. Tyler Garrett had a team-high eight assists.

Rockhurst shot 36.2 percent from the field (25 of 69) and hit 12 of 39 three-pointers (30.8 percent). Marshawn Blackmon led Newman (9-4) with 22 points and 17 rebounds. The Jets shot 38.2 percent from the field (26 of 68).

The Hawks (6-5, 1-1 GLVC) return to conference play on Thursday, Jan. 3 at home against Missouri S&T.
