Griffons break away for 89-81 win over Hawks

A big second-half run by Missouri Western was too much for Rockhurst to overcome in falling to the Griffons 89-81 Wednesday night in St. Joseph, Missouri.

The Hawks opened the second half on a 13-6 run to take a 48-46 lead at the 12:06 mark. Missouri Western then went on an 18-3 run over the next seven minutes to take a 64-51 lead. Rockhurst never pulled closer than eight points over the final five minutes.

Quinton Curry led the Hawks with 18 points (on nine-of-16 shooting) and 14 rebounds. Curtis Lewis scored a team-high 19 points on eight-of-20 shooting.

Chris Hamil posted 14 points and four rebounds. Eddie Muench tallied 13 points on five-of-12 shooting. Tyler Garrett added nine points and six rebounds.

"I thought we were ready to play," said Rockhurst coach Drew Diener. "They shot better than expected in our scouting report of them. We struggled to make outside shots, which put a lot of pressure on all other parts of the game."

Rockhurst (6-4) shot 44.0 percent from the field (33 of 75) and hit five of 25 three-pointers (20.0 percent). Tyrell Carroll led Missouri Western (6-6) with 23 points and seven assists. The Griffons shot 48.2 percent from the field (27 of 56).

"Through 10 games, consistency has been our biggest struggle from half-to-half and game-to-game," added Diener. "I believe our effort is there, but our ability to make shots has been up and down. We play with great flow offensively at times and other times dribble too much. I think we have a great group of guys and talent to win at a higher rate."

The Hawks return home to host Newman on Dec. 29.
