Hawks open season with 103-73 victory

Chris Hamil scored 27 points on nine-of-14 shooting to lead Rockhurst to a 103-73 victory over Purdue Northwest in the Hawks' season opener Friday night in te GLAIC-GLVC Challenge in Liberty, Missouri.

Hamil scored 13 points in the first half and 14 points in the second half. He connected on six 3-point field goals. Eddie Muench tallied 12 points, six rebounds and five assists. Connor Evans also scored in double figures with 12 points.

Quinton Curry finished with nine points and five rebounds. Curtis Lewis also scored nine points. Auston Rushing totaled eight points and eight rebounds. Freshman Tyler Garrett added eight points and five assists.

"We had great efforts off the bench tonight," said Rockhurst coach Drew Diener. "Foul trouble was an issue in the first half and our bench came in and performed well. We shot the ball well, which was nice to see."

Rockhurst shot 56.9 percent from the field and collected 34 points off the bench. The Hawks jumped out to a 50-35 halftime lead behind 59.3 percent shooting. The Hawks opened the second half on a 23-7 run to take a commanding 73-42 lead with 13:41 left to play.

Player of the Game: Chris Hamil. The sophomore guard connected on six of nine 3-point field goals. He scored 16 points of his 27 points in the first half to give the Hawks a 15-point halftime lead.

  • The Hawks scored 48 points in the paint, while holding Purdue Northwest to 30 points in the paint.
  • Rockhurst outrebounded Purdue Northwest, 48-25.
