Rockhurst falls short at DePaul in exhibition opener

DePaul held off a resilient effort by Rockhurst to post a 72-65 victory over the Hawks in an exhibition opener Thursday night at Wintrust Arena in Chicago.

Four players scored in double figures to lead the Hawks. Sophomore guard Chris Hamil scored a team-high 16 points on six-of-12 shooting, including sinking four of the Hawks' 11 three-point field goals.

Sophomore forward Eddie Muench tallied 13 points, while Curtis Lewis and Quinton Curry each finished with 11 points. Senior forward Connor Evans posted a team-high eight rebounds.

"Our guys played with great poise tonight," said Rockhurst coach Drew Diener. "We knew we had to open up with great offensive possessions, and we did just that. They clearly have a lot of size and talent so keeping them off the glass was big."

The Blue Demons outrebounded the Hawks, 38-26, and scored 15 second-chance points. DePaul led 39-34 at halftime and took a 64-53 lead with 4:40 left to play. The Hawks ended the game on a 12-8 run.

"We had some plays late that we could have made in defensive rotation. Overall, I was pleased with our mindset tonight; we had a great bench," added Diener.

DePaul's Eli Cain led all scorers with 19 points while Devin Gage and Paul Reed added 12 points apiece. Femi Olujobi (11 points) and Jaylen Butz (10 points) rounded out the Blue Demons that finished with double-digit scoring.

The Hawks open the 2018-19 regular season on Friday, Nov. 9 against Purdue Northwest in the GLIAC-GLVC Challenge in Liberty, Missouri.
