Hawks advance in NCAA Regional with 3-1 win over Prairie Stars

Rockhurst took command early, winning the first two sets in posting a 3-1 victory over Illinois Springfield (25-22, 25-20, 20-25 25-22) in the first round of the NCAA Midwest Regional Thursday in Springfield, Missouri.

The 22nd-ranked Hawks, 31-6 overall, have won their last eight matches and will next meet fifth-ranked Ferris State in the Midwest Regional semifinals at 5:00 p.m. Friday.

Alyssa Woodman led the Hawks with 18 kills and 16 digs. Karli Reichert tallied 17 kills and 15 digs. Mary Rolf posted 11 kills and three blocks. Emily Matio collected eight kills and six blocks. Emma Kriete added 15 digs, five kills and four blocks. Kalie Arnold collected a team-high 33 digs. Dani Prusha finished with 54 assists, 11 digs and four blocks.

"The first one (in the NCAA Tournament) is always tough. We were fortunate to get by them in the fourth set. We kind of let them creep back in. They dug a lot of balls. We were persistent to get the W," said Rockhurst coach Tracy Rietzke.

Set One: Rockhurst 25, Illinois Springfield 22
The Hawks ended the set on an 8-3 run. Neither team led by more than three points. Woodman and Reichert combined for 14 kills.

Set Two: Rockhurst 25, Illinois Springfield 20
Rockhurst jumped out to a 15-10 lead behind an 8-3 run. Mary Rolf, Reichert and Kriete combined for 12 kills.

Set Three: Illinois Springfield 25, Rockhurst 20
The Hawks only hit .098 as the Prairie Stars pulled away late after taking a 16-11 lead. Rolf and Woodman combined for seven kills.

Set Four: Rockhurst 25, Illinois Springfield 22
Rockhurst led from start to finish while closing out the match on a 4-2 run. Reichert posted two kills for the last two points of the set.

Player of the Match
Alyssa Woodman. The All-GLVC First Team outside hitter averaged 4.50 kills (with a .326 hitting percentage) and 4.0 digs per set. She had eight kills in the first set and added four kills in the fourth set.

• The Hawks posted a .201 hitting percentage, while Springfield finished with a .180 hitting percentage.
• Rockhurst finished with 61 kills, 97 digs and 10 team blocks.
