Late rally falls short in road loss at Washburn

The Washburn Ichabods took the lead for good midway through the second half and held off a late Rockhurst rally to edge the Hawks 76-72 Wednesday night at Lee Arena in Topeka, Kansas.

Rockhurst ended the first half on a 24-13 run and opened the second half on a 9-4 run to take a 44-37 lead. Washburn outscored the Hawks 31-14 to grab a 68-58 lead with 4:52 left.

Back-to-back layups by Chris Hamil capped a 12-4 run over the next three minutes to cut Washburn's lead to 72-70 with 1:52 left.

The Hawks had three chances to tie the score in the final 62 seconds only to miss two shots and turn it over once. "You cannot beat good teams with 20 turnovers," said Rockhurst coach Drew Diener.

Washburn scored 17 points off the Hawks' turnovers and scored 40 points in the paint while holding Rockhurst to 30 inside points. Rockhurst shot 40.4 percent from the field and Washburn finished with a 43.9 field goal percentage.

Hamil led the Hawks with 16 points and three steals. Curtis Lewis posted 15 points, four assists and four rebounds. Auston Rushing tallied 12 points on four-of-six 3-point shooting. Quinton Curry and Connor Evans combined for 15 points and 13 rebounds.

Javion Blake led Washburn (2-1) with 19 points, eight rebounds and six assists.

The loss leaves the Hawks at 1-2 heading into a Saturday road game at Roger State.
