Rockhurst hosts Maryville in NCAA Midwest Regional

MIDWEST REGIONAL: The 12th-ranked Rockhurst Hawks, 13-2-2, are hosting a second-round Midwest Regional game in the NCAA Division II Men's Soccer Championships for the third year in a row. Second-seeded Rockhurst will meet third-seeded Maryville, 13-3-2, on Sunday, Nov. 12, at 1 p.m. at Rockhurst's Bourke Field. This is the second meeting between the two schools this season. The Hawks and Saints battled to a 1-1 tie in their earlier meeting this year in St. Louis.


NCAA HISTORY: Rockhurst will be playing in its 10th NCAA Tournament and its sixth in the last seven years. The Hawks have advanced to the national semifinals in three of the past four years. Rockhurst has captured four NCAA Midwest Regional crowns since 2011. The Hawks own an all-time record of 10-6-6 in the NCAA Tournament dating back to 2002.


NATIONAL RANKINGS: Rockhurst ranks 12th in assists (39), 32nd in scoring offense (2.18) and 24th in shutout percentage with eight shutouts in 17 games in NCAA Division II. Senior goalkeeper Logan Feldmann ranks 16th nationally in goals against average (0.68). Senior forward Kaleb Jackson stands 26th in goals (12) and 27th in points (30) in Division II. Senior midfielder Adam Michel ranks 15th nationally in game-winning goals (5).


SIX-TIME GLVC CHAMPIONS: The Hawks captured their sixth Great Lakes Valley Conference regular season championship in 2017 with a 12-1-1 league record. Rockhurst also won GLVC regular season titles in 2008, 2011, 2012, 2015 and 2016.


GLVC HONORS: Rockhurst senior forward Kaleb Jackson, senior goalkeeper Logan Feldmann and Rockhurst head coach Tony Tocco garnered major postseason honors from the Great Lakes Valley Conference. Jackson was named the GLVC Offensive Player of the Year for the second year in a row. Feldmann was selected the GLVC Defensive Player of the Year, while Tocco earned GLVC Coach of the Year accolades. Jackson leads the GLVC in points (30) and is second in goals (12). Feldmann ranks second in the GLVC in goals against average (0.68) and shutouts (8). Tocco is now a six-time GLVC Coach of the Year, having previously been recognized by GLVC coaches in 2008, 2011, 2012, 2015 and 2016. Jackson, Feldmann, senior midfielder Adam Michel, senior defender Connor Mullen, senior defender Filippo Santandrea and sophomore defender Luca Mastrantonio were named to the All-GLVC First Team. Junior forward Umoh Ufot and junior defender Swann Vincent nabbed All-GLVC Second Team honors. Senior midfielder Ben McDonald and junior defender Sal Caruso received All-GLVC Third Team accolades.


COACH TONY TOCCO: Coach Tocco ranks second on the all-time list among intercollegiate men's soccer coaches with 693 victories, trailing Ohio Wesleyan's Jay Martin who has 695 victories. Since joining the NCAA in 1998, the Hawks have advanced to the national tournament 10 times. The Hawks finished third in the nation in Division II in 2015 and 2016, and ranked fourth nationally in 2008, 2011 and 2012. Rockhurst has been the No. 1 seeded team in the NCAA Midwest Regional five times. The Hawks won NCAA Midwest Regional titles in 2011, 2013, 2015 and 2016, and reached the national semifinals in 2013, 2015 and 2016.


SCOUTING THE SAINTS: Maryille advanced to the second round of the Midwest Regional with a 1-0 victory over Indianapolis Friday night at Rockhurst. The 21st-ranked Saints scored on an own goal in the 29th minute. Sophomore forward Pontus Gitselov leads the Saints with seven goals and 17 points. Gitselov and junior goalkeeper Christian Kjaersgaard were named to the All-GLVC Second Team.
