Late shot lifts Hawks to first conference victory

Taylor Skala (21) hit the game-winning shot for the Hawks.
Box Score Taylor Skala's running jumper with 5.4 seconds left lifted the Rockhurst women to a 70-68 victory over Missouri S&T Saturday at Billy Key Court in Rolla, Mo. The come-from-behind win was the Hawks' first conference victory of the season and first ever win at Missouri S&T.

Rockhurst, which led 32-25 at halftime, rallied from a 58-48 deficit in the final five minutes. Mary Dineen and Kendall Hart combined for 13 points as the Hawks ended the game on a 22-10 run. Hart hit two of her four three-pointers in the run, while Dineen scored eight of her game-high 17 points down the stretch.

Hart's final three-pointer of the game gave the Hawks a 68-66 lead with 42 seconds left. The Lady Miners tied the score on two free throws with 29 seconds left. The Hawks called a timeout with 15 seconds left to set up for the game-winning basket.

"We knew they would double on Mary, so we either wanted Taylor to drive the basket or pass it out to Becca Strobbe for a jump shot," said Rockhurst coach Larry Park. "That play was big. Road wins are hard to get in the GLVC.

"This was a game of runs. We hit some dry spells in the second half. I thought we had more energy in the final minutes."

The Hawks, 6-9 and 1-6 in the conference, shot 49 percent from the field (24 of 49) and 88.9 percent from the foul line (16 of 18). Joining Dineen in double figures were Hart with 16 points and Lauren Meyers with 12 points. Meyers led the team with eight rebounds and five assists.

Rockhurst will host Truman State on Thursday, Jan. 23 at 5:15 p.m.
